Description:

The Security Officer carries out the responsibilities of maintaining order within the hospital by monitoring and securing the premises and by responding to threats and safety concerns. Enforces all health center regulations in accordance with applicable operation guides. This position will provide support to nursing and other staff in management of escalating patient/family situations by working to de-escalate the people involved. This position will assist patients and families with customer service needs by serving as an ambassador for the clinic and hospital.

This position will include Nights and rotating weekends.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED :

  • High school degree or GED.

  • At least one year of previous experience withinsecurity services, public safety, law enforcement or military service preferred.

  • Ability to read, write and speak English.

  • Possess an ability to function well during emergency situations.

  • Possess the ability to maintain diplomacy, courtesy, and cooperation despite the stresses of a patient care environment.

  • Valid Driver’s License required, must meet MercyOne’s Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, must be at least 18 years of age and be eligible to drive per Iowa state law.

  • Proof of completion of Adult and Child Mandatory Reporter abuse training.

  • Certified in Management of Aggressive Behavior (MOAB) training within six (6) months of hire.

  • Basic computer skills, Microsoft products

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

  • Identifies, reports and documents safety hazards, and handles such irregularities as assigned by Supervisor in a manner prescribed by hospital and department policy.

  • Initiates investigations into incidents or activities of criminal nature and submitsappropriate information to law enforcement agencies as directed.

  • Assumes responsibility for proper inventory, pickup, transport, and storage of patient valuables and after hour patient deposits.

  • Maintains storage and records of lost, found, and stolen property of visitors, patient, and employees.

  • Demonstrates an ability to effectively and positively manage potentially aggressive, loud, disorderly, or violent patients or visitors on a consistent basis and summons police to assist if necessary.

  • Assists in situations or physical altercations that may require physically escorting individuals off campus or restraining individuals until additional support / law enforcement arrives.

  • Demonstrates an ability to work collaboratively with Newton Police Department, Jasper County Sheriff, EMS personnel, and nursing staff and providers.

  • Files written report after each shift, listing all potential Environment of Care issues. Inputs data as required for reporting, recording and record keeping purposes.

  • Investigates and documents detailed descriptions of all incidents that are out of the ordinary.

  • Provides accurate directions, information and, if necessary, escort to the public.

  • Provides traffic control, as needed, including during helipad use.

  • Provides employee or visitor assistance, such as vehicle starting and safety escorts.

  • Monitors area to prevent theft from parked automobiles.

  • Assist with loading patients and/or baggage into automobiles.

  • Demonstrates leadership abilities in emergency/crisis situations.

  • Demonstrates excellent communication skills.
