Preferred Qualifications:Demonstrated experience in proposal writing, budgeting, and supervision and/or training of undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and research staff.Demonstrated record of research publications in peer-reviewed journals. Alternatively, in an industrial research setting, must demonstrate record of internal reporting and leadership in developing, setting, and communicating innovative technology directions.Demonstrated hands-on experience with experimental methods and analytical treatments that are commonly used in metal powder processing research, including powder synthesis techniques for making a controlled yield of micron-sized powders, e.g., by gas and centrifugal atomization, along with methods for consolidation of powders, including sintering to full density or controlled partial sintering, either with or without binder assistance, and post-consolidation manipulation of microstructure, for example, by thermal-mechanical processing and by recrystallization or controlled grain growth.Demonstrated experience with or knowledge of thermal spray or cold spray deposition and additive manufacturing as alternative consolidation processes is also preferred, including ability to design microstructural modifications based on variation of processing parameters.Demonstrated experience with the various techniques to characterize metal powders fully, including size, composition, flowability, and surface chemistry.Demonstrated experience with characterization methods and analytical treatments that are commonly used in metallurgical and materials science research, including electron beam-based microstructural analysis and semi-quantitative chemical techniques, as well as e-beam, X-ray, neutron, and photon-based surface probe methods, (e.g., EBSD, XRD, NMR, AES, and XPS).Working knowledge of thermodynamic modeling (e.g., CALPHAD), solidification modeling, and/or atomistic modeling typically used to contribute to alloy design investigations with specific processing methods, e.g., additive manufacturing, and with final property targets in mind. Familiarity with other types of electronic structure modeling and methods of processing kinetics modeling or simulation methods, again with specific processing methods and with property goals that are preferred.

Job Description:

The Division of Materials Science and Engineering (DMSE) within

Ames Laboratory, is seeking candidates for the position of Scientist Il/III.

Ames Laboratory is a Department of Energy (DOE) funded National Laboratory operated through contractual agreement with Iowa State University. The position will be filled as an Ames Laboratory Scientist II or III based on the qualifications of the finalist.

This position conceives, designs and conducts studies of metal powder processing, involving formation of liquid metal droplet sprays in controlled and/or reactive atmospheres, droplet and spray deposit solidification and deposition studies (including thermal spraying), and solid state sintering and thermal-mechanical processing of powder-based materials. This includes designing new alloys for additive manufacturing and other novel powder metal consolidation processes.

The position collaborates with the supervisor and other PIs in the Division of Materials Sciences and Engineering within the Ames Laboratory; invents, performs and supervises experiments; interprets the results; presents and defends research at professional meetings; drafts manuscripts for publication with collaborating co-authors; guides experimenters in the conduct of experimentation and the interpretation of results; and writes research proposals for future funding of research projects (as PI or co-PI). The duties of this position also include the maintenance and supervision of the daily operation of the state-of-the-art experimental facility.

In addition to the above, the Ames Laboratory Scientist III will have additional leadership roles on research projects including managing budgets and staff. This position will communicate with key stakeholders and design and implement a project management framework, including the meeting of project deadlines.

The Ames Laboratory Scientist III will have demonstrated the effective communication skills, both written and verbal, that are needed to interface with a diverse team of administrative staff and powder metallurgy professionals, as well as physical sciences and engineering professionals, which are essential for success in this position.
