Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

The Department of Human Sciences Extension with Iowa State University is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Extension Program Specialist I – Hotlines.

This position will answer the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Healthy Families Hotline and other hotlines through telephone calls, e-mails, and Live Person text from individuals and professionals. The incumbent will assess callers’ needs using active listening skills, suggest appropriate resources, provide peer counseling, and transfer callers to appropriate referrals. Many of the calls will deal with health issues. In addition, this position will standardize and routinely update databases containing health and human services referrals; submit reports from databases for monthly reports or various information on the hotlines; accurately chart calls from the various hotlines on appropriate computer programs to summarize activity and information on each hotline. The Extension Program Specialist I will create and implement new ideas to update web sites and other promotional materials for the hotlines, including update databases containing health and human service information for referrals. This position will also attend meetings for various hotlines, present updated information and statistics about the hotlines, as well as attend fairs, special events, and various state agencies to market and promote hotlines. This may involve night or week-end functions.

The successful candidate will have written and interpersonal communication skills and the ability to communicate clearly on the telephone. The candidate will also have the ability to work independently as well as within a team environment. Excellent active listening and organizational skills will also be needed in order to be successful in this position.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree and 1 year of related experience; OR a combination of education and related experience totaling 5 years.

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to Human Sciences, Health Education or Services, Social Science, or closely related field.

Additional years of experience.

Experience working in a health-related field.

Experience working with a crisis hotline or information & referral system.

Demonstrated Spanish language fluency.

Experience using computers, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and database reporting systems (i.e. iCarol, Filemaker Pro, etc.).
