Position Title:Greenhouse Caretaker

Required Minimum Qualifications:• Four years of experience in the operations and maintenance of a greenhouse, or any combination of vocational training and experience from which comparable knowledge and ability can be acquired. • Successful completion of commercial certification tests for application of pesticides and be eligible for certification as required.

Preferred Qualifications:Knowledge of horticultural plants and activities relating to culture and care and proper greenhouse environmentKnowledge of pesticide and beneficial insect application, storage, and record keepingKnowledge of plant diseases and appropriate treatments

Job Description:

The Caretaker maintains the facility, environment for optimum plant growth, an inventory of supplies and equipment, and keeps records required for effective operations of the greenhouse.

Responsibilities

  • Equipment repair and facility maintenance.

  • Replacing and repairing lamps and fixtures.

  • Monitor growth chambers for problems with lighting and temperature control.

  • Clean chambers.

  • Prepare fertilizer solutions and service equipment used for distribution as needed.

  • Monitor inventory of supplies and report needs to Building Manager

  • Maintains a proper environment including cleaning and maintenance

  • Consult regarding plant problems, possible solutions, and exchanging information related to the facility and its contents.

  • Monitor the plants and the environment for insects and insect damageProperly apply control measures against pestsProperly store, mix, maintain and handle related chemicals and equipmentLog insect control measures and develop new control strategies as insects change or become resistant to current control methods.

This is a part time position which could be benefits eligible.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Ability to lift or move large containers of soil, sand, or other materials.

• Knowledge of horticultural plants and activities relating to culture and care and proper greenhouse environment.

• Ability to collect data and maintain accurate record for class and research activities.

• Knowledge of pesticide application, storage, and record keeping.

• Knowledge of plant diseases and appropriate treatments.

• Ability to communicate orally and in writing.

• Ability to use and care for gardening tools, equipment, and materials.

• Ability to plan, direct, and coordinate the work of others.
