Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) is currently seeking qualified applicants for an Industrial Hygienist I or II position. EH&S is an employing unit which reports to the Senior Vice President for the Division of Operations and Finance at Iowa State University (ISU). EH&S aids the campus community in preventing illness and injury, protects the environment and connects the university to the message of safety and preparedness. EH&S delivers effective education, fosters beneficial partnerships, maintains technical expertise and provides exemplary service.
Responsibilities of this position include supporting the Occupational Health Services program through implementation of workplace safety surveys; collecting workplace exposure samples and identifying analytical methods to detect the extent of workplace exposures; and employing engineering, work practice controls, and other methods to control potential health hazards. This will be accomplished using various industrial hygiene sampling methods, devices and direct reading instrumentation. The candidate will use gathered exposure data to coordinate employee participation in the Occupational Medicine Program. Candidate will oversee a Respiratory Protection Program and advise on personal protective equipment use. Other responsibilities include OSHA compliance, ergonomic evaluations, accident investigation and reporting, workplace safety inspections, regulatory compliance audits, and development and administration of health and safety training.
To qualify for the Industrial Hygienist II, the candidate must have a Bachelor’s degree and 2 years of related experience. In addition to the aforementioned, the Industrial Hygienist II will be expected to implement workplace exposure minimization programs through risk assessments and application of the hierarchy of controls. The Industrial Hygienist at this level will engage medical professionals, analyze exposure assessment data, while assisting with IH database management, to include basic programming.
The successful candidate will have the ability to form positive working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and external customers and establish professional campus and community relationships through effective written and oral communication; strong problem solving capabilities along with the ability to work independently as well as with a team; and excellent organizational and multitasking skills to handle a variety of simultaneous duties. The candidate will also possess the ability to routinely use personal computers along with a variety of software to develop and maintain exposure monitoring information and create related reports.
