Job Description:Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

The Department of Music and Theatre in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Iowa State University is seeking an accomplished, dynamic individual to join the Iowa State University Cyclone Football Varsity Marching Band (ISUCF’V’MB) as a lecturer of Color Guard. This position would assist in all facets of fall guard including member selection, design, instruction, and administration.

We have an eager student body and excellent infrastructure that is full of potential for success. The ISUCF’V’MB regularly sees prospective members that have experience with world class organizations, but likewise also has a base of music education majors and non-music majors interested in learning about guard.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

Proven success as a Color Guard director or instructor with high-achieving units

Experience working with or directing Drum Corps International/Winter Guard International (DCI/WGI) units

Preferred Qualifications:

Team-based approach to designing and teaching

Good administrative and record-keeping skills

Ability to teach to various constituents (intermediate through advanced)

Ability to recruit and retain color guard members effectively

Eminent performing experience (DCI/WGI)

Department/Program & College Description:

The Cyclone Marching Band (CMB) is an integral part of Cyclone Nation and housed within the Department of Music and Theatre at ISU. With more than 425 students in the Athletic Band program at ISU, it is a thriving organization on campus. Recently, the Cyclone Marching Band was awarded the prestigious Sudler Trophy for outstanding excellence in collegiate marching band; the highest honor a college band can achieve. The band has performed in Normandy, France, London, San Antonio, Orlando, Memphis, Phoenix, as well as countless exhibitions at marching band contests in Minnesota, Illinois, Missouri, South Dakota, and of course Iowa. The CMB color guard is the largest color guard in the state, with an ambitious goal of growth to 50 members in the near future.

Department Unit/Website:

This position is subject to ‘non-employment dates’ each Spring semester from 01/01 – 05/15th.

Work Schedule:

The Director of Athletic Bands recognizes that the successful professional may be balancing other priorities in addition to the University guard. Obligations that would be considered required would include:

Band Camp - August 16 - 23, 2020 three block days (flexible schedule to be arranged)

Fall rehearsals - Monday through Friday, 5:00-6:30 pm (with attendance expected for least one rehearsal per week)

Sectionals - currently scheduled on Tuesdays, 7-10 pm

Performances - ISU home football games (approx. 6 Saturdays per season, scheduled to be coordinated with Color Guard Coordinator)

Other events - BOA or HS exhibitions, varies each year. Away travel and Bowl trip are not considered essential obligations of this position.
