UnityPoint Health Chief Medical Officer in Anamosa, Iowa

Primary Function and Relationship to Total Organization: This is a part-time leadership position, concentrating approximately 8-12 hours per week towards these responsibilities. The expectation is that the incumbent will be practicing medicine and maintain a clinical practice. The CMO will be a member of the Executive Leadership team, providing perspective and direction on decision making as it affects the medical staff and hospital operations in general.

Chief Medical Officer. As Chief Medical Officer, Physician’s essential functions and responsibilities include the following:

  • To direct and guide Medical Directors of clinical departments and committees in setting and obtaining objectives for the continuing improvement of the quality of care.

  • To assure, through directing and guiding clinical department chairpersons and committees, that appropriate systems are established and maintained on a continuing basis for ongoing review, analysis, and evaluation of physicians’ performance and all clinical departments and divisions.

  • Serve as an active member of the UPH-JRMC executive leadership team.

  • Assist in the development and implementation of UPH-JRMC strategic objectives and initiatives.

  • Educate Medical Staff regarding administrative issues and current issues facing medicine.

  • Provides ongoing evaluation and recommendations regarding opportunities to enhance the utilization of services by local physicians.

  • Serves as a liaison with outside organizations regarding medical information, education and public relations.

  • To conduct regular, formal orientation programs for new appointees to the medical staff, clinical department chairpersons, and committee chairpersons.

  • To ensure that the medical staff has effective administrative support which will facilitate self-government with adequate bylaws, rules and regulations; in order to maintain effective functioning committees.

  • To keep informed of the activities and findings of all medical staff surveillance programs and to promptly direct the necessary educational measures when individual or collective patters of practice warrant.

  • To keep the President of the Medical Staff and the Hospital President/CEO informed of all infractions and violations of Hospital policies; patient safeguards; Medical Staff Bylaws, and Rules and Regulations for which corrective action is considered necessary now and in the future;

  • To assure that a procedure for supervision of all new appointees to the medical staff for a stated period of time is established and kept viable. To assure the formal system for reappointment of members to the medical staff is followed, in accordance with predetermined criteria, and that the recommendations for each reappointment consider the individual’s past clinical performance and compliance with Hospital policies.

  • To make certain that all members of the medical staff are afforded the necessary steps of due process whenever, for any reason, their clinical performance is open to question; whenever disciplinary procedures are contemplated; or whenever their clinical privileges may be reduced, rescinded, revoked, or temporarily suspended.

  • Physician shall work collaboratively with leadership including the CEO, CNO, Medical Staff President, Medical Staff Officers, and Hospital Administration; Physician shall partner with the QI Director for medical affairs role

Qualifications/Experience:

· Board certified physician.

· Current state license issued by the State of Iowa Board of Medicine.

· A minimum of 2 years of clinical practice experience.

· Technologically proficient with a penchant for using technology tools, in the practice of medicine and patient care as evidenced in the use of electronic medical records and other tools.

· Demonstrated ability to gain medical staff support when developing, implementing, and promoting projects, ventures, and programs.

· A relationship builder and effective communicator across the organization to include medical staff, senior management, clinical leaders, staff and patients.

Education:

· A degree of Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from an accredited and approved school of medicine.
