SUMMARY Helps prepare both cytology and tissue specimens for Pathological examination, as well as helps with preparation and distribution of pathology reports. Prepares correspondence for Pathologist by performing the following duties:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Prepares and processes tissue specimens from surgery, ER, Clinics, and autopsies for pathological examination.

Processes, embeds, and sections tissues for slides. Processes both pap smears and non-gyn specimens.

Checks each specimen for criteria of acceptability, assuring proper patient identification, specimen integrity, and appropriate paperwork.

Assists the pathologist with tissue grossing procedures. Prepares the tissue grossing area with appropriate materials and instruments.

Maintains and assures specimen identification by correctly labeling cassettes and maintains workflow in concert with the pathologist.

Cleans the workstation at the completion of grossing procedures. Ensures aseptic techniques and observes health safety protocols during the cleanup procedure to minimize risks to self and co-workers.

Cleans Histology room, changes staining solutions and maintains equipment. Oils and cleans microtomes according to schedule.

Files paraffin blocks and slides. Sends out slides and/or blocks when requested and maintains log of material sent.

Orders all supplies for the pathology area of the laboratory.

Coordinates all activities involved in the preparation of anatomical pathology and autopsy reports.

Maintains pathology records and an established filing system to expedite the retrieval of information.

Prepares correspondence to facilitate on-going communication and efficient departmental operations as designated by the Pathologist and Laboratory Manager.

Cleans the morgue after autopsies and disposes of tissues and cytology material monthly through bio-hazard waste process.

Presents a professional departmental image by the use of appropriate telephone and interpersonal skills with co-workers, visitors, outpatients and physicians.

Completes all other duties as assigned.

Complies with the Corporate Compliance Policy and all laws, regulations, and Standards of Conduct relating to the position and agrees to report any suspected violations of law or Standards of Conduct.

Complies with all applicable state and federal regulations.

Attends all mandatory meetings and programs.

Maintains a safe work environment using safe work practices, utilizing standard precautions and complying with hazardous waste procedures at all times as described in St. Anthony's Safety Manual.

Maintains the confidentiality of patient, resident, employee and organizational information.


This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Associate degree (A.A.) or equivalent in clinical lab science, chemistry or biological sciences or a minimum of one to three years full-time experience in histopathology or comparable under the supervision of a pathologist.


Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, patients, families and other employees or the organization.


HT (ASCP) preferred.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.
