Integrated DNA Technologies Research Scientist III in Coralville, Iowa

We are seeking a Molecular Biologist to join IDT’s Enzyme Development R&D team. The individual will work under the direct supervision of a Staff Scientist and with cross functional teams to improve and develop new genomics applications. Areas of work will encompass: enzyme characterization, buffer formulation, genotyping, gene expression, PCR, and Illumina Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) library construction. The individual will have hands-on experience at the bench and proven abilities to carry out experimental techniques including quantitative PCR, cloning, library preparation, assay development, UV and Vis spectroscopy, gel electrophoresis, use of liquid handling devices, and basic bacteriological growth. Attention to detail and ability to keep comprehensive scientific records is an absolute requirement.

The ideal candidate will be a recent Ph.D. graduate with 0-1 year experience, a Master’s degree graduate with three or more years of experience, or a Bachelor's degree graduate with 6 or more years of experience.

This is an INTERMEDIATE research position, and more commonly associated with a title of "Senior Research Assistant, or Postdoctoral" in the Midwest.

Position Specific Duties / Essential Functions:

  • Plan, design, and execute complex experiments to support the development of qPCR and NGS products

  • Work with cross functional teams to develop new applications

  • Assist other scientists in executing experiments as needed including setup and running of equipment

  • Isolate and purify nucleic acids from a variety of biological sources

  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, keep work spaces clean and well organized, order and stock reagents as needed

Job Specific Duties / Essential Functions:

  • Applies extensive scientific knowledge with broad laboratory skills to execute bench experiments using a variety of molecular biology, cell biology, biochemical and general laboratory techniques as directed.

  • Plans experimental details required for execution of assigned work under minimal to moderate oversight.

  • Analyzes raw data, reports results and plans the next steps.

  • Organizes and manages moderately complex projects.

  • Utilizes mathematical, graphical, imaging, nucleic acid analysis, and other software aids as needed.

  • Operates and maintains laboratory equipment.

  • Maintains accurate and detailed records of experimental work.

  • Assists in the preparation of technical reports for internal use.

  • Assists in filing invention disclosures and writing manuscripts for publication.

  • Interacts with and assists other members of the R&D team as needed to meet research objectives.

  • Interacts with internal departments and IDT customers to assist with customer service/technical support and to advance collaborative research projects as directed.

  • Presents experimental results and data analysis at group meetings as directed.

  • Leads or participates in the maintenance of laboratory cleanliness including but not limited to washing and storage of glass/plastic ware and autoclaving waste, organization of reagents, etc.

  • Represents IDT at scientific conferences; prepares and presents data-oriented posters.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree (in Biology, Genetics, Chemistry or a related life sciences field) with six or more years relevant lab experience required.

  • Master’s degree (in Biology, Genetics, Chemistry or a related life sciences field) with three or more years relevant lab experience preferred.

  • Ph.D. degree (in Biology, Genetics, Chemistry or a related life sciences field) with one or more years relevant lab experience preferred.

Professional Experience:

  • Proficiency in a variety of PC software programs with strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office required.

  • Previous experience with primer and probe design required.

  • Previous experience with operation of real time qPCR instruments required.

  • Previous experience with isolation of DNA and/or RNA from biological sources required.

  • Previous experience with quantitation of DNA and RNA using spectrophotometric and/or fluorescent methodologies required.

  • Previous experience with recombinant DNA techniques required.

  • Previous experience with tissue culture techniques preferred.

  • Previous experience with library preparation for NGS preferred.

  • Knowledge of Illumina NGS sequencing platforms preferred.

  • Knowledge of statistical tools for Design of Experiments (DOE) preferred.
