Job Summary/Essential Duties:

  • Has regular interaction with behavioral servicespatients/clients, requiring mature judgement, broad experience andtraining specific to highly volatile personalities/situations. Works inclose concert with clinical staff of behavioral units. Officers in this positionwill be required to quickly assess situations and take appropriate action.Must know and comply with Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA), aswell as, Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Health CareOrganizations (JCAHO) standards, especially those related to Seclusion andRestraint for Behavior Management.

  • While performing tours of facilities, examinesaccess control points for appropriate security, assesses environment ofcare deficiencies (e.g. lights out, fire-doors broken, excessive hallwayclutter, missing fire extinguishers, etc.), and observes general activityof operations for any safety and/or security concerns. Appropriatelyfollows-up with any noted deficiencies.

  • Operates audio/visual monitoring systems, includingcomputer-linked security and access control systems. Responds to computersystem messages and alarms according to established security policies andprocedures.

  • While patrolling grounds, thoroughfares and parkingarea, checks vehicles in restricted areas for parking authorization andensures that all emergency access is unobstructed. Observes generalcondition of and activity surrounding these areas for any safety and/orsecurity concerns. Appropriately follows-up with any noted deficiencies,including the issuance of parking citations.

  • Escorts employees, patients and visitors to andfrom parking lots or between buildings, as requested, and ensures theprotection of employees in parking lots during shift changes.

  • Confronts persons in unauthorized areas or who arebehaving in a suspicious or unruly manner. May question, give directionsto, delay, or subdue individuals depending upon the severity of thecircumstances; under direction of city or state police, may be required tohold or restrain individuals involved in illegal or dangerous activities.

  • Responds to all announced "Code"emergencies occurring on hospital property, such as combative patients,fire alarms, bomb threats, or other disaster situations. Emergency and"on demand" response to certain off-site clinics may also berequired (see Security policies for details).

  • Monitors and escorts all Court or County Committal(Mental Health/Behavioral Services) patients processed through MercyHospital Emergency Services or Immanuel Medical Center EmergencyDepartment or Mental Health Center. Also monitors voluntary patients whomay be considered a danger to self or others and all patients consideredchemically dependent who may or may not be seeking treatment. Searches allpersonal property for weapons, medications, illegal drugs or drugparaphernalia to insure the safety of patients and staff.




Previous relevant

experience in security, law enforcement, or military police work, with

demonstrated ability to perform security duties in highly volatile environments

and situations is preferred. Experience with healthcare security

responsibilities is highly desirable.


Prefer a high

school education or GED.

An Associate

Degree or Bachelor Degree in Security Administration, Criminal Justice, or a

related field is preferred.


Must be at least

21 years of age have a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record

required. Position requires the incumbent to be approved to drive by the CHI

Health insurance provider. Must complete and pass the CHI Health Ergonomic Job


BLS or BLS instructor certification is required upon hire.

Additional requirements:

Incumbent must

maintain current certification in Pressure Point Control Tactics (PPCT).

Incumbent must attain initial (PPCT) certification within nine months of hire


All security

officers who work in the state of Iowa must complete mandatory reporter (child

and/or vulnerable/dependent abuse or neglect reporting) training within 6

months of hire and recertify every 5 years.

Job Analysis.


The incumbent must

have basic knowledge of security systems, procedures, and enforcement codes.

Job requires excellent written communication skills for preparing reports and

evaluations; comprehensive reading skills for reading procedures, policies,

reports, and labels; and critical listening and verbal communication skills

when communicating with patients, visitors, doctors, and co-workers. Basic

competence with personal computers and limited keyboarding skills will

facilitate working independently. Must possess strong time-management and

organization skills. Additionally, the incumbent must demonstrate personal

traits which include high-level commitment, motivation, and energy; team

orientation; professionalism; trust; personal honesty and integrity; and a

demonstration of placing others in a place of high value and treating them with

dignity and respect.
