UnityPoint Health Application Analyst - EPIC PB in Des Moines, Iowa

This position supports Epic PB.

Responsible for implementation and support of applications. Works closely with clients to troubleshoot and correct problems relating to applications, and assists with conversions to and implementations of software products. Is proactive in identifying Enterprise wide application requirements and communicating solutions to its clients. Functions in an enterprise wide manner, and places success of whole above individual entities within that enterprise. Promotes enterprise wide standardization. Works in “Project Team Environment” to provide computer solutions for enterprise clients. Concisely communicates concepts to team members and clients with varying levels of computer understanding. Uses operational expertise to seek out, research and evaluate a variety of solutions to provide clients with high quality, efficient products. Maintains and supports all installed application software products. Successful job performance results in enhanced employee and management productivity. Indirectly contributes to patient care by providing system access.

  • Works directly with the implementation and ongoing support of electronic medical record systems.

  • Reviews module enhancement specifications incorporating standardization guidelines into tailoring specifications and performs integration tests on delivered enhancements.

  • Assures compliance with federal, state, and local laws or regulations as directed by key stakeholders.

  • Understands regulatory requirements to better prepare the organization for voluntary accreditations.

  • Provides input into preparation of project plans and monitors own task schedule.

  • Acts as project lead as assigned by department manager.

  • Works collaboratively with other IT group members and end users to ensure optimal application functionality.

  • Participates in and coordinates status meeting and conference calls as needed for assigned projects.

  • Assists with training, development, and mentoring of staff.

  • Provides presentations to internal staff and clients.

  • Plans, conducts, and documents proceedings of meetings as needed.

  • Provides timely and accurate documentation.

  • Provides night and weekend on-call coverage as scheduled. May assume additional on-call responsibilities as directed by Department Manager.

  • Works closely with other department teams to ensure efficient and effective implementation of project solutions.

  • Provides project status reports on a regular basis for assigned active projects.

  • Maintains regular and consistent attendance at work.

  • Adheres to all UnityPoint Health Personnel policies and procedures, departmental policies and Safety guidelines.

  • Behaves in a manner consistent with all Corporate Compliance policies and procedures.

  • Completes special projects and monthly reports as assigned.

  • Performs other duties as requested by Department Manager to facilitate the smooth and effective operations of the department.

  • Adheres to activities that support Epic Good Install and Good Maintenance criteria.

  • Supports Affinity Groups, IQ4 Users Groups, and Governance structure.

  • Understands and supports Service Level Agreement for issues resolution. Participates in root cause analysis and problem solving activities to improve customer service.

  • Adheres to Change Management Policies and Procedures.

  • Understands and supports change request processes.

  • Minimum of two years’ experience as an application analyst or is able to demonstrate “Essential Functions and Responsibilities” as outlined above.

  • Demonstrates detail knowledge base and skill level in computer application methodology as it is used to automate health care business practices.

  • Understands computer system functionality, limitations, and architecture of supported applications.

  • Ability to work as a team member and in stressful environments.

  • Ability to understand and apply guidelines, policies and procedures.

  • Requires highly developed communications and negotiation skills to effectively work with all levels of management throughout UnityPoint Health, its subsidiaries and affiliates.

  • Possesses excellent writing and verbal communications skills and the ability to understand and communicate concepts to technical and non-technical individuals.

  • Demonstrates an ability to coordinate and manage large, complex projects and be able to negotiate and build consensus among groups or individuals with diverse interests and function effectively as a team leader in a team environment.

  • Ability to understand and deal effectively with problems and opportunities, which arise, in a complex multiprocessing environment is crucial.

  • Clinical background is highly desired for clinical applications.

  • Information Technology experience is highly desired.

  • Leadership experience is highly desired.

  • Knowledge of healthcare industry systems is highly desired.

  • Ability to understand and apply guidelines, policies and procedures.

  • Experience with and demonstrates competence in Microsoft Office applications


Bachelor’s degree in related field preferred. Equivalent education and work experience will be accepted only if previous experience applies to specific systems.

Certifications / Licenses For Epic Analysts:

  • Achieve Epic Certification within six weeks of attending final Epic course or as outlined in training plan as agreed to between Department Manager and employee. Additionally, an employee will have a maximum of three attempts to pass an Epic exam. If either of these Epic Certification requirements are not met employment will be terminated.

  • Recertification is required as the Epic application is upgraded for continued employment. Rules for recertification attempts apply as listed previously.
