Responsible for developing and executing operational plans for the national PL underwriting and conversion organization and ensuring those plans are aligned with corporate strategy. Multi-channel responsibility (IA, EA, and Direct), P&C PL focus only.

Job Description

Reporting Relationships: Reports to VP, Field Product – PL. Direct reports include 9 UW Directors; Indirect reports include managers, supervisors, underwriting associates, and screening associates.

Core Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for National PL underwriting and strategy. Partners with Field/Staff Product, Staff Underwriting, and regional leadership to determine underwriting appetite, strategically align book to appropriate risk, growth and profit, CAT experience, and portfolio management standards and executes accordingly on all of these fronts.

  • Oversees direction of organizational efficiency, communication, and engaging a large team. Drives automation of transactional underwriting based decisions through the utilization of a lean management system and workforce management best practices.

  • Responsible for overall underwriting execution and relationship management across the nation.

  • Manages the selection, training, evaluation and compensation of workforce within the national PL UW organization to ensure a high degree of competency and professionalism.

  • Lean Deployment: Oversees the development and maintenance of the lean management system structure and governance including consistent application of lean principles and tools, alignment with enterprise lean vision & strategy and quality assurance.

  • Oversees associate management including performance management, salary planning and administration, training and development, workflow and organization planning, day-to-day management, hiring and placement, and disciplinary actions for direct and possibly indirect reports.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Typical Skills and Experiences:

Education: Bachelor’s degree or post graduate studies preferred.

License/Certification/Designation: CPCU is highly desirable.

Experience: Ten years’ experience in personal/commercial lines insurance, financial services, marketing or communication, including six years previous leadership experience needed.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in written form, with all levels of management; advanced organizational abilities and the capability to manage several diverse tasks concurrently; high levels of credibility and professionalism in dealings with senior executives.

Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.
