Position Description

What does a great Senior Backup Systems Engineer do?

The Senior Backup Engineer is responsible for the installation, implementation, and ongoing management of the backup infrastructure for distributed Fiserv products.

This position reports to the Storage and Backup Engineering Manager and is part of a dedicated backup team that works closely with other engineering teams to provide technical support for all backup management-related activities. Depending on skill sets this position may perform work on Cisco SAN Fabrics, EMC & IBM data protection technologies. This individual may also act as a liaison to other departments, representing the backup team on all technical matters related to backup and recovery management.

This position requires a background in backup solutions, with a demonstrated ability to design project solutions within engineering standards and implement solutions, manage change, and add backup policies in a large-scale, mission-critical, multi-TB backup environment. Strong organizational and communication skills are necessary. A strong background in implementing and supporting disk-based storage infrastructures for backup solutions is required.

  • Implementation, management and maintenance of backup solutions utilizing EMC Avamar, DDBoost, and Data Domain primary job responsibility

  • Administration of Elastic Cloud Storage, and Data Protection Advisor (Fiserv to provide training)

  • Administration of Cisco SAN switches utilized for Backup SAN Fabric

  • Network knowledge, including bandwidth, NIC configuration, CIFS, NFS, and NDMP as part of backup infrastructure implementation and administration

  • Operating systems knowledge, including Windows and Linux, is required. ESX, AIX, HP-UX, and Solaris knowledge as it relates to backup and recovery administration/support

  • Participation in new technology research and selection (under Architect oversight)

  • 24x7 Tier-3 operations support and on-call support responsibilities

  • Ability to work on project teams, delivering on key project milestones, and communicating effectively with a wide variety of people

  • Participation in Disaster Recovery infrastructure planning, building, and testing

  • Performance monitoring, performance tuning and capacity monitoring of backup infrastructure

  • 10% frequency of travel

Basic qualifications for consideration:

  • High School/GED Diploma

  • 5 years’ experience required

  • Requires a strong technical background in industry standard IT technologies as it pertains to backup solutions, with the proven capability to implement and support complex environments

  • Experience with EMC Avamar, DDBoost, and Data Domain backup product experience is required

  • Knowledge of VMware, UNIX and Windows platforms as it pertains to backup implementations and administration

  • Experience with networking protocols and components as it pertains to backup infrastructure

  • Experience in performance monitoring, performance tuning, and capacity monitoring of backup infrastructure

  • Strong understanding of Project Management processes, Change Management processes and excellent backup infrastructure troubleshooting skills are required

Preferred qualifications for consideration:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science/Engineering or related discipline

  • Experience with ECS, and DPA desired

  • IBM TSM backup product experience a plus

  • CommVault backup product experience a plus

  • Storage administration of Cisco SAN, EMC VMAX & Isilon, IBM DS8 & Global/Metro Mirror a plus

  • High organizational skills

  • Ability to handle multi-tasks and meet deadlines

  • Ability to work efficiently and productively without direction or guidance

  • Capable of exercising extreme discretion and independent judgment

  • Ability to handle extremely confidential information in a professional manner

  • Ability to communicate, both verbally and written, with a high level of confidence

  • MS Office skills especially word and excel
