LSI seeks an Education Specialist for Refugee Community Services in Des Moines. This opening will average 20-22hours/week and will work week days and evenings.DUTIESThe Refugee Education Program offers language and cultural training to newly-arrived and former refugees in Polk County, including English language instruction, employment-readiness training, Citizenship preparation, and community-based English classes. Community-based English classes are located throughout Des Moines and surrounding areas. These classes provide assistance to students by offering childcare at select sites, coordinating transportation among students, and providing native language support so that students may overcome barriers to attending class. The Education Specialist manages student outreach, recruitment and registration, day-to-day activities, volunteer coordination, and student support services.DETAILSManage student registration and placement testingCoordinate collection and maintain accurate student data in the database and on surveys, distribution lists, reports, and spreadsheetsMaintain relationships with host sites through communication and timely response to on-site issuesSchedule and supervise childcare providers, enforce childcare policies, and maintain records of daily childcare attendanceAssist students directly or through referrals in overcoming barriers to attending classes and working towards educational goalsDocument student support services providedOversee and maintain program calendar of eventsWork with team to plan and coordinate volunteer trainings and meetingsCommunicate with volunteer teaching assistants via phone and email to request information, send reminders, and coordinate logistics as requested by program staffAttend regular team and staff meetingsQUALIFICATIONSRequired: High school diploma and one year of experience working with immigrant or refugee learners.Preferred: High school diploma and one year of experience working with immigrant or refugee learners with language proficiency to meet the needs of refugee clients served.This position requires a valid driver's license, auto insurance, a good driving record and the ability to pass an extensive background check including checks of the Dependent Adult and Child Abuse registries, Sex Offender registry and a criminal history check.At LSI, competitive compensation goes far beyond an hourly rate.
