Youth Emergency Services & Shelter Residential Supervisor ***THIS POSITION REQUIRES EVENINGS INCLUDING EVERY OTHER WEEKEND *** in Des Moines, Iowa


Provides supervision of agency’s assigned shelter units and residential staff. Coaches, mentors, and provides ongoing feedback to shelter staff including timely 90 day and annual performance reviews, observations on the unit, and periodic viewing of video footage. Maintains a safe and nurturing environment for children living in shelter. Supervises and provides guidance to Resident Advisor's to ensure routines and rules are followed and residents’ needs are met.


  • High School diploma (or equivalent) and experience equaling two years may substitute for higher degree. Bachelor’s Degree preferred

  • 2 years’ experience in a shelter or other residential program preferred

  • Supervisory experience preferred.

  • Knowledge in the field of child services required.

  • Knowledge or prior experience working with high-risk youth, especially with youth who have experienced abuse, neglect, homelessness or other traumatic experiences, preferred.

  • Must be hard-working, mature, and possess a strong desire to make a difference in the lives of YESS clients and their families.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required.

  • Must have the ability to make independent decisions, manage multiple functions under stress and with changing priorities.


  • Provide supervision of residential staff.

  • Provide supervision to assigned interns including meeting with them on a regular basis, completing necessary paperwork and other requirements for their experience.

  • Provide ongoing formal and informal feedback to residential staff by conducting 90 day and annual performance reviews in a timely manner, observing staff on units and providing immediate feedback, conducting supervisions with staff, and regularly observing video footage to use as a training tool.

  • Maintain a physical presence on all units, actively engaging with Resident Advisors to provide feedback, direction and assistance.

  • Supervise daily and/or nightly routines to ensure youths’ needs are met and the units are following the schedule, rules, and expectations.

  • Complete and email nightly updates at the end of each shift to defined residential team.

  • Maintain a safe, nurturing environment for children living within YESS’ emergency shelter.

  • Facilitate conversations with members of the team to ensure best practices are followed individual youth’s care.

  • Deal tactfully with youth, family members, visitors, government agency representatives and the general public.

  • Provide positive role modeling for residents and staff in areas of communication, decision-making, and problem-solving.

  • Participate in all scheduled meetings, trainings and supervision sessions as requested.

  • Observe behavior and interactions involving youth at all times, and report any potentially harmful or suspicious behaviors immediately through the incident reporting process.

  • Assume a leadership role, particularly during crises, to affect calm and effective solutions.

  • Assist in training of new Resident Advisors

  • Participate in supervisory on-call rotation.

  • Ensure compliance with licensing and programming standards.

  • Other duties as assigned
