POSITION PURPOSE:

This position has primary responsibility for strategic direction; nursing care, acute, observation, SNF, respite care, pediatrics, monitored beds, pharmacy, social services, utilization review, discharge planning, employee health, infection control, risk management and continuous quality improvement. Manages and leads the coordination of programs and services designed to meet the needs of patients served. Works in collaboration with service line managers and directors throughout MercyOne Elkader to assure smooth care transitions. Adheres to MercyOne performance expectations and performs all defined job services and job responsibilities in accordance with the mission, vision, and values of MercyOne Elkader Medical Center.

What you will do:

  • Investigates new nursing techniques, practices, equipment and products through educational seminars, continuing education and periodicals.

  • Plans, develops, implements and controls the annual budget for assigned departments.

  • Initiates and maintains the development and implementation of policies and procedures that govern the Department of Nursing Service activities.

  • Develops and maintains clinical records and reports related to patient census and acuity and such other reports required to assure the quality of patient care and the best utilization of personnel.

  • Reviews and monitors work schedules, work hours and duty assignments for all supervised personnel, effects changes as needed.

  • Participates on hospital committees and serves as a consultant to other departments as requested. Co-leads Infection Control Committee with infection preventionist.

  • Collaborates with physicians regarding the clinical aspects of care.

  • Inspects all supervised department areas on a regular basis and initiates corrective action and follow-up.

  • Maintains and directs a staff education program for orientation and skill training for personnel.

  • Consults with pharmacists, Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee and medical staff concerning control and administration of medications and ensures that nursing personnel are made knowledgeable and kept current on medications in the formulary.

  • Verifies nurses’ credentials and maintains a system which indicates qualifications, experience, and accomplishments of each member of the Nursing Department.

  • Responsible for risk management for the organization, in conjunction with the President. Reviews and files variance reports, does follow-up as necessary and provides summary to the Safety Committee and/or PAC/Medical Staff each month or as requested.

  • Does admission and concurrent in-house review for all patients.

  • Develops and updates the orientation program for all levels of nursing.

  • Coordinates Basic Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support and TNCC classes and recertification for staff whose position requires this certification.

  • Assists in development of materials for patient education and secures approval from the medical staff for such materials.

  • Knows, understands, incorporates, and demonstrates the MercyOne and Trinity Health Mission, Vision, and Values in behaviors, practices, and decisions.

  • Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations, MercyOne and Trinity Health’s Organizational Integrity Program, Standards of Conduct, as well as other policies and procedures in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical, and professional behavior.

  • Maintains confidentiality of information pertaining to clients, physicians, employees, and MercyOne business.

  • Demonstrates general working knowledge of computers and department specific software.

  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

What we are looking for:

  • Registered Nurse in state of Iowa

  • Current BSN degree or actively enrolled in a BSN program.

  • 5+ years nursing experience in a medical/surgical position or 3 years in a complex management position.

  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.

  • Must be able to function independently and in collaboration with other health care professionals.

  • Must be willing to travel to MercyOne or Trinity meetings, as requested.

  • Certified in BLS, ACLS, PALS, and TNCC within 6 months of hire.
