Nursing Supervisor - Surgical Services

FTE: 1.0 (Full-time, 40 hours per week)

Shift: M-F, variable shifts and start times.

  • Acts as manager designee at hospital meetings and/or activities as directed by manager.

  • Communicates with all team members/physicians to prioritize care and services to meet organizational and departmental needs.

  • Responsible for supervising the delivery of patient care in both Works collaboratively with the manager and staff members to promote an environment which fosters quality patient care, one which provides a rewarding climate for staff and enhances professional nursing practice.

  • Supervises coordination of nursing care in accordance with nursing standards

  • Provides guidance and supervision to staff to achieve compliance with organizational and unit policies and standards.

  • Assists with managerial activities of the units related to performance evaluations, staffing, management of productivity, employee counseling, scheduling, and compliance to standards, performance improvement initiatives, and budgeting.

  • Facilitates documentation of patient care consistent with documentation guidelines.

  • Empowers staff by encouraging staff to round with physicians, solicits staff participation, and encourages staff involvement at all levels of patient care.

  • Participates in unit operations demonstrating professional behaviors to include supporting goals of unit and maintaining awareness of resource utilization.

  • Participates in non-direct patient care activities including educational activities, performance improvement activities, standards development and review, hospital/nursing committees and other related activities.

  • Assists with unit meeting agendas/unit meeting facilitation.

  • Assumes responsibility in coordinating the orientation of new employees.

  • Plans and coordinates competency and skill verification.

  • Demonstrates formal and internal leadership behaviors.

  • Demonstrates effective communication skills in working with staff.

  • Assists with managerial activities of the units related to staff development, education, and unit representation in assigned committees.

  • Works closely with staff from the Health Education Center to coordinate, implement and evaluate new equipment and/or processes.

  • Identifies learning needs of individuals and groups and develops measures to meet them.

  • Assist with staff cross training to other departments.

  • Utilize Adaptive Design for problem solving.

  • Assist with disciplinary action/termination.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education:

  • Bachelors of Science in Nursing required or actively working toward with a documented expected completion date to be within 2 years of hire.

Licensure:

  • Current RN Licensure in State of Iowa or applicable compact state.

  • Must be licensed in state of residence.

Experience:

  • 3 year staff nurse experience required, supervisory experience preferred.

Skills/Abilities:

  • Excels in effective and positive communications.

  • Promotes cooperative and team efforts.

  • Ability to delegate wisely, makes decisions with confidence.

  • Has a working knowledge of staffing levels and competencies.

  • Ability to teach others in an effective manner.

  • Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification required.
