High School Band Teacher
Position Criteria:
Valid State of Iowa teaching license with 5-12 Music endorsement - 145
Demonstrated ability to lead and direct a comprehensive instrumental music program, with 5 years experience at the High School level preferred.
Previous classroom experience at the 9th-12th grade levels including successful experience with core instrumental music instruction, marching band, jazz band and other special ensembles, 5 years of experience preferred.
Provide leadership, supervision and organization in the 9th -12th grade instrumental music department and carry out the objectives of the instrumental music program
Demonstrate understanding of how to engage, instruct, and assess multiple learning styles to meet the Instrumental Music Standards.
Demonstrate the ability to organize, maintain, and communicate student progress to all stakeholders.
Demonstrates consistent use of student assessment to guide instructional decision making and growth in skills.
Demonstrated ability to support diverse learners (i.e., IEP, 504, etc...) in the instrumental music classroom and ways of modifying instruction to meet student needs.
Proven record of parent outreach and positive and proactive communication.
Proven record of collaboration with the Instructional Coach or curriculum to improve practice over time.
Demonstrate aptitude for performing tasks listed
Must exhibit ethical practices and be a role model to students
Performance Criteria
Plan and organize the band year including
Create the calendar for the year including all performances, rehearsals and camps for concert band, marching band, jazz band, honor bands, and solo/small ensemble events
Reserve facilities for all scheduled performances, rehearsals and camps
Reserve transportation for all performances and trips, including busses and trailers where necessary
Communicate yearly calendar to students, parents, administrators, other Fine Arts directors, and any other interested parties
In collaboration with the assistant director, oversee all aspects of the marching band including
Coordination of percussion, color guard, and visual staff members
Selection and design of the fall marching band show
Selection and training of student leadership team
June rehearsals and leadership training as necessary
Band camp, including partial and full rehearsal days during the first three weeks of August
Coordination with Band Parent Organization for support including uniforms, props, snacks, etc.
Before-school rehearsals as necessary from August through mid-October
Home football games
Saturday festivals and competitions
Homecoming parade or festival
Performance at high school assemblies as arranged with building principal
In collaboration with assistant director, oversee all aspects of concert band including
Ensemble and chair placement auditions
Rehearsals, sectionals, and home concerts
Performances at local festivals
Support at graduation and Academy Awards as arranged with building principal In collaboration with assistant director, oversee all aspects of jazz band including
Ensemble auditions and group placement
Establish and communicate before school and evening rehearsal schedule for each ensemble
Schedule contest and festival performances as is appropriate for each ensembleIn collaboration with assistant director, oversee all aspects of honor bands.
In collaboration with assistant director, oversee all aspects of solo and ensemble performances including
Support of students as they select and prepare solos and ensembles
Provide a venue for students to perform solos and small ensembles
Oversee and coordinate all aspects of festival and contest hosting.
Oversee and coordinate all aspects of band trip, including application (if necessary), and communication with students, parents, administration, school board, and travel company as necessary (Trip is on a rotation with other school-sponsored groups)
Attend FOFA (Friends of Fine Arts) meetings
Communicate as necessary with students, parents, administrators, and any other interested parties regarding schedules, performances, trips, fundraising, etc
Collaborate with facility support staff as needed
