Today, the Department boasts more than 80 faculty members, 57 residents, and 12 fellows who provide clinical anesthesia services for more than 50 operating rooms at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics, as well as procedural anesthesia services for Pediatrics, Radiology, and nearly 20 other surgical and non-surgical clinics and specialty suites. This broad range of services places the Department in the 99th percentile for diversity of surgical cases among U.S. hospitals.Our Pediatric Anesthesiology Division is a highly collegial group that administers anesthesia and procedural sedation for a full range of complex pediatric surgeries, as well as various diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in satellite locations. Last year, the department performed nearly 8,000 anesthetics on infants and children. We are a Level 1 Trauma Center and perform kidney, liver, heart, and lung transplants.The University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital is Iowa's only comprehensive and nationally ranked children's hospital, with more than 170 pediatric physicians and surgeons. In 2018, the U.S. Nwes and World Report ranked our new children's hospital in pediatric cancer, neonatology, pediatric nephrology, and pediatric orthopedics.Departmental faculty serve on editorial boards of major anesthesiology journals, provide refresher courses for the American Society of Anesthesiologists annual meeting, and serve as board examiners for the American Board of Anesthesiology. Department researchers are funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Defense, and non-governmental organizations. The Department has an extensive and well- organized mentoring program for junior faculty and is proud of its tradition of providing a wide range of career development opportunities.Pediatric Anesthesiologist's RoleThe anesthesiologist will be responsible for actualizing our tripartite mission-clinical care, education, and research-as it relates to our Pediatric Anesthesiology Division.
