Corteva Agriscience is seeking a leader for its controlled environment team in Johnston, IA. The group consists of more than 100 employees and 180,000 square feet of static and automated greenhouses, dozens of growth chambers, and an automated headhouse. This team supports Corteva's business, including but not limited to corn, soy, canola, wheat, and cotton. Programs supported range from early discovery to post-commercialization and include breeding, transgenic traits, and genome editing.

Core responsibilities of the controlled environments team include plant care, plant phenotyping, plant molecular characterization, pipeline design/operation, cross-functional project management, information management, technology deployment, and facility maintenance. This team collaborates with molecular, discovery, breeding, and regulatory teams.

Summary

As a member of the Biotech Trait Characterization and Development (TCD) leadership team, the controlled environments leader is responsible for establishing and monitoring standards and strategies to deliver the seed and data required to achieve Corteva's Biotech goals.

Responsibilities - What You Will Do:

Provide people leadership to Controlled Environment organization - a group of 100 employees, including full-time and contractors. Foster a culture of belonging and create opportunities for the development and growth of people by driving engagement and instilling trust. Ensure and reinforce a strong safety culture.

  • Lead and set technical strategies to achieve success, including developing and deploying new technologies. Own the processes and improvements required to support the organization's strategy. Effectively collaborate with scientists in trait discovery, trait development, and breeding organizations.

  • Participate in resource and workload planning to ensure delivery and align plans with operational budgets; develop and manage capital plans.

  • Represents controlled environments team on the TCD leadership team.

  • Accountable to deliver quality seed and data to advance Corteva's Biotechnology pipeline.

Qualifications

Requirements - What Skills You Need:

Ph.D. in a relevant field, plus six or more years of relevant experience preferred. M.S. with additional experience can substitute for a Ph.D. (relevant fields include horticulture, trait development, entomology, plant pathology, plant breeding, and plant phenotyping).

  • Broad scientific knowledge in areas such as plant sciences, genetics, molecular biology, analytical chemistry, and horticulture.

  • Demonstrated experience in managing complex operations.

  • Direct and indirect managerial experience.

  • Demonstrated leadership, communication, and people management skills.
