Digital Field Phenotyping Specialist (2001986) – Nevada, Iowa

Where the Chemistry Happens

This position is responsible for performing field work to develop and implement robust and innovative digital phenotyping technologies for soybean and other crops, at the R&D site in Nevada, Iowa, USA. The main purpose of the position is to collect, manage, process and deliver high quality sensor-based phenotyping data.

Formula for Success: You Will…

  • Collect sensor data in Trait Development and Breeding field trials on-site, by operating specialized equipment such as drones, Phenotracker, Phenotower, soil probes, seed scanner, weather sensors, etc.

  • Perform adequate and timely data management, processing and delivery of the sensor data for further analysis. Make use of standardized BASF data pipelines and platforms e.g. iQarus. Ensure all data are stored in the appropriate repositories.

  • Support in-field testing and validation of new digital phenotyping methods. Contribute to the development of protocols for testing. Assist in collecting other than sensor data if required.

  • Ensure regular and proper maintenance of all sensor equipment. Keep concerned operating manuals/work instructions updated.

  • Suggest improvements of equipment and processes to increase efficiency and/or effectiveness of digital phenotyping.

  • Provide support to other activities performed at the R&D site if needed.

  • Ensure compliance with all Government, Regulatory, QMS, (Bio)Safety and Stewardship guidelines

  • MSc in Agricultural Science/Engineering or related, with minimum of 2 years relevant experience or BSc in Agricultural Science/Engineering with minimum of 4 years relevant experience.

  • Experience in row crops field trial management and use of field digital phenotyping tools are required.

  • Experience with GIS application in farming and/or agricultural research that includes a comprehension of remote sensing principles.

  • Demonstrated electrical and mechanical skills when deploying remote sensing and phenomics instrumentation to the field environment

  • Experienced with data management, e.g. familiarity with databases and data curation

  • Individual should have good organizational skills, interpersonal and communication skills with ability to work in a team environment.
