UnityPoint Health Phlebotomist Specimen Collect in Sioux City, Iowa
Primary responsibility of the phlebotomist is to obtain specimens, maintain specimen equipment, professional patient relationships, and clerical duties involving the laboratory.
Consistently applies and adheres to the Department Standard Operating Procedures for proper identification, including emergency patient identification protocols and completes necessary documentation.
Arranges and prioritizes workload ensuring the timely completion of work orders.
Uses proper technique to obtain correct and adequate specimens
Completes test ordering functions correctly; carefully and correctly labels and processes specimens and completes computer documentation.
Operates testing equipment according to department protocol, performing and recording maintenance, QC, and proficiency testing functions at required intervals.
Courteous and pleasant in interactions with patients; protects patient confidentiality and respects the Patient Bill of Rights.8. Willingly participates in the training and orientation of new personnel and students (Clinical Laboratory Science and Phlebotomy) when asked to do so; offers positive suggestions for Department improvement.
Demonstrates adequate communication skills with co-workers and others; telephone interactions and response to pages are appropriate and effective.
Complies with department rules and regulations; reads procedure manuals annually and reads minutes when unable to attend department meetings; consistently neat and tidy in appearance.
Proficient in collection of specimens from vein, artery, or capillary; including blood cultures.
Performs interdermal skin/and anergy testing.
Performs POC glucose testing in accordance with the written clinical laboratory policy and procedure.
Performs POC i-STAT testing in accordance with the written clinical laboratory policy and procedure.
Is responsible for receiving and logging in specimens received through the tube system or by SPD.
Validates that all samples collected by nursing personnel, from patients with indwelling vascular access, are collected are collected in accordance with laboratory policy and procedure and labeled appropriately.
Performs Chain of Custody drug screen/breath alcohol collections for Occupational Health Clinic if instructed to do so.
Performs required yearly continuing education per laboratory policy.
Participates on Code Blue, Trauma, Rapid Response, Stroke Alert, MI Alert, and Malignant Hyperthermia teams.
Obtains blood from off-site patients when necessary.
- High School Diploma or equivalency.
Minimum Work Experience
Must maintain a valid driver’s license

Machines: Laboratory computer, hospital computer, computer interface maintenance, POCT analyzers (Accuchek, i-STAT), laboratory vehicles
Administrative: Computer maintenance functions, Clerical – chain of custody completion for Drug Screen testing, Inventory and supply, assemble and organize AM workload, telephone interactions with other areas/patients
