American Equity Investment Associate II in West Des Moines, Iowa



The Investment Associate II works with Fixed Income Portfolio Managers and the Chief Investment Officer, to enhance portfolio analytics, reports, and portfolio management processes; and with the Fixed Income Research Teams, to perform fundamental credit investment research and security analysis. The incumbent performs qualitative and quantitative assessments, research and analysis in general fixed income, credit, and other investment areas, enhancing American Equity’s ability to control risk and evaluate relative value consistent with investment strategies.   • Drives new and existing analytic and reporting work, including enhancing portfolio analytical systems, generation of weekly, monthly, and quarterly analytical portfolio management reports to assist in trading activities, and providing and implementing data and analytical support in portfolio management and investment strategy processes.

  • Generates value-added management reports and publications working with Portfolio Managers that are utilized by all facets of American Equity to enhance management decision making capabilities.

  • Performs fundamental credit investment research and security analysis for the Fixed Income Research Teams, including analyzing and monitoring of existing investments to avoid future credit losses, as well as assessing and analyzing the risk/reward characteristics of new investment opportunities.

  • Develops a structured and systematic approach to analyzing the creditworthiness of a borrower using qualitative and quantitative factors.

  • Makes independent investment recommendations, including responsibility for independently conducting surveillance on existing investments, which impacts AEL's capital and profitability by preventing future credit losses.

  • Reviews and integrates Bloomberg, PAM, GX Reporting, Bond Edge, Excel, and other analytical fixed income tools and software into the analysis process, continually increasing proficiency in understanding and application. Expands the use of other quantitative tools, such as Visual Basic, into portfolio management processes.

  • Completes various related projects as assigned, such as obtaining familiarity with topical, current business news and issues and producing ad hoc reports on a timely basis, which are used by portfolio managers in assessing portfolio risks and performance return attribution.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Economics, Accounting, or related field of study; plus a minimum of 2 years of related analytical and reporting experience in the investment/asset management industry; or equivalent combination of education and/or experience is required.

  • Experience with and working knowledge of laws, rules, regulations and best practices in the fixed income investment industry.

  • Experience with coding and graphical packages preferred.

  • Pursuit of CFA designation is preferred, if not currently possessed.


  • Strong quantitative, analytical, and modeling skills.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills with the ability to successfully communicate with coworkers, outside sales professionals, outside peers, various company management teams, and senior management.

  • Highly detailed-oriented and well organized with strong time management skills and the ability to handle multiple projects on an ongoing basis.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (with an emphasis on Excel), Bloomberg, PAM, and other software used for investment analysis, portfolio management, and reporting.

  • Ability to successfully handle pressure, prioritize projects, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced work environment.

  • Ability to maintain composure while working under pressure.

  • Demonstrates intellectual curiosity with the ability to comprehend and apply investment related principles of advanced mathematical concepts and theory, statistics, accounting, economics, and other practical solutions.

  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.

  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from coworkers, peers, senior management, and/or outside management.

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and/or governmental regulations.

  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
